The comics were expensive, so I don't know how closely the movie followed it, but all the concepts are sound. The guy who played V, was the Elf king in the Lord of the Rings movies, damn fine actor.
The monolog V recites to Evey after the alley fight came from somewhere else... read it in drama class some years back. The concepts of information control and Machiavellian behavior are important subjects.

Movies are an adaption. They are not a waist of time if you enjoy them. Every story has been told before, its how you tell it, that makes it original.
The thing I loved the most about the new Batman is the ideology of becoming more than a man, by becoming an idea and symbol. V for Vendetta expanded on this idea in a more profound way.
